John Jackson’s 3500GT, affectionately known as Chloe, is one of the best known Classic Maseratis in the world. A veteran of competitive regularity events such as the Classic Malts, the Three Castles and the Rallye des Alpes, as well as many Maserati events both in the UK and around Europe, it has always been looked after by McGraths since a first restoration in 1995.
By 2012, the years and the miles had taken their toll on the delicate Superleggera body and an in-depth body restoration commenced. With everything removed apart from the engine and suspension, the car was sent to McGrath body partner Prestige Restoration where the aluminium skin and the steel frame beneath were subjected to a thorough restoration.
Once complete, the whole body was protected from further deterioration and then repainted to a high standard in its original red. All of the trim was either re-chromed or polished and new rubber seals fitted.
Mechanically, the car has been constantly maintained and therefore needed only its annual service. At the same time, we also fitted electric power steering by ‘EZ’, which lightens the steering at parking speeds while still maintaining an authentic feel on the move.
The restoration work was completed in time for the car to attend the Maserati Club celebrations at Silverstone in July 2014 but its first big trip was in September, a ten day tour through Switzerland and the Alps before descending into Italy to join the Maserati Centennial Gathering.
By the time Chloe lined up for the Concours in Turin (see our News piece on this website), she had already covered 2000 miles since the restoration but still won her class. A perfect Maserati Gran Turismo!
