The advent of the 3200GT in 1998 heralded the start of a new era for Maserati. Sleek new coupe styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Ital Design brought Maserati up to date and the whole production line in Modena was renewed to give this car every chance of success. It worked and is the car on which the future of the company has been built.
Brutal performance from a 3.2-litre twin-turbo V8 engine was one of the car’s main assets but the detail that most remember is those unique ‘boomerang’ rear lights. Over 800 examples were delivered new in the UK, by far the most successful model to that date and the Maseratisti absolutely loved them.
In 2001 Maserati launched a special edition called Assetto Corsa ‘or race kit’. New springs and uprated dampers, new wheel design with sticky track day tyres and an uprated steering rack to give sharper feel were the main mechanical changes, along with some interior details and of course, a limited edition plaque. There were 75 Assetto Corsa models sold in the UK, with a mix of 6-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission.
Sold new in the UK by Maranello Concessionaries, this Assetto Corsa was specified in Rosso Mondiale with Nero leather upholstery and registered in September 2001. The original sales invoice and correspondence with Maranello Sales is on file, including a tantalising invitation to first owner to the Maserati Master GT course, where, guided by instructors, owners could sample new Maseratis on track at Varano in Italy. We will never know whether the first owner enrolled on the course, but he certainly seemed to enjoy his 3200 as he would keep it for over 20 years. A full set of service stamps in the book show gently appreciating mileage. Until 2008 the servicing was undertaken by Maranello and thereafter by Giallo, the Kent-based Maserati independent specialist.
In 2022, having covered approximately 40,000 miles, the car was sold to its second and current owner, an Englishman living part-time in Portugal, who used it for the long journey to and from the UK. Serviced initially by a Portuguese specialist near Lisbon, on one of the return trips it was brought to us here at McGrath for a more extensive mechanical refurbishment including a new clutch, new rear suspension arms, repairs to the brakes and a major service. In 2025, at 48,000 miles, we carried out another round of work including new tyres on refurbished wheels, new rear shock absorbers, a recon throttle body and a new front suspension arm. Total expenditure on these two visits was circa £22,000, putting the car back into very good condition.
Pressed back into service for the long continental trip, the car has now covered 51,000 miles. It is being offered for sale on behalf of the owner, who has now purchased a much older Maserati with which to amuse himself in Portugal.
A very clean example that drives really well, has great history (with comprehensive file) and has had only two owners, it is being offered for sale with another service and new MOT completed. A rare and collectable edition of this popular Maserati model, it is available to view at our workshops.
